I’m not sure when I first started to have the problem. I discovered this while running 10.13.4 but it’s been a problem for several OS versions. Make sure that you do not share your VNC port to the internet, at least not on the same port that it actually runs on so they can’t find it so easily, and your screen sharing experience will improve drastically.

With the NAT share turned off my throughput is closer to 75megs a second. My machines are connected via gigabit ethernet and my throughput when dragging and dropping a file onto the VNC window was around 300k a second.

When you multiply that by 3 or 4 infected machines trying a password every second or 2 you’ve got a connection that freezes for a second then tries to catch up for half a second, then freezes for a second again. What actually happens is that a failed log in attempt from the internet causes the server to hang up all actually working sessions for a fraction of a second. I wished the adaptive firewall actually worked to block those folks but I didn’t think it was harmful as long as I had a strong password.

If you do this on the default port, which I had done so I could also access it from outside if I needed to, then you’ll get hit pretty constantly by infected windows machines out there looking to find your password. I’ve been treating it as if it were a networking problem but it turns out there is a problem with the screen sharing system if you have VNC passed through your NAT router to the internet.
